Say 和 Tell 的分別

Say 和 Tell 都是用來傳達信息的動詞，但它們在不同的上下文中使用，並且有不同的語法結構。

Say

1. 用法：用來表達或傳達某些話語。Say 的重點在於說話的實際內容。
2. 結構：Say 通常用在引用某人的話，或當重點是所說的話，而不是信息的接收者時。
3. 例子：
   • He said, “I’m going to the store.”
   • She says she’s tired.
   • What did they say about the meeting?

Tell

1. 用法：用來向某人提供信息或指示。Tell 的重點在於向某人傳遞信息。
2. 結構：Tell 通常後面接一個人（信息接收者）和信息本身。
3. 例子：
   • He told me that he’s going to the store.
   • She told them she’s tired.
   • Tell her the truth.

注意：

直接引用：

• Say 用於直接引用：She said, “I’m hungry.”
• Tell 較少用於直接引用：（正確：She told me she was hungry. 錯誤：She told, “I’m hungry.”）

 

（例外）Tell 不用信息接受者的情況：

在一些慣用語(idiom)中，並且上下文已交待了誰是信息接收者的時候。例如：

1. 說實話（Tell the truth）
   • 情況：當要求某人誠實時使用，通常是在討論誠實性或尋求真相的上下文中。
   • 例子：Parents often tell their children, “Always tell the truth.”
2. 講故事（Tell a story）
   • 情況：當要求某人講述某個故事或經歷時使用。
   • 例子：In a classroom, a teacher might say, “Can you tell a story about your summer vacation?”
3. 報時（Tell the time）
   • 情況：詢問現在的時間，或要求某人說出時間。
   • 例子：Someone might ask, “Can you tell the time, please?”

1. Tell a lie（說謊)
   • 情況：當指控某人說謊或談論誠實性時使用。
   • 例子：It’s wrong to tell a lie.  /  You are telling a lie.
2. Tell a joke（講笑話）
   • 情況：當某人說一個笑話使人發笑時使用。
   • 例子：He loves to tell jokes at parties.
3. Tell the truth（說實話）
   • 情況：當要求某人誠實時，通常是在討論誠實性或尋求真相的上下文中。

• • 情況：詢問現在的時間，或要求某人說出時間。
  • 例子：”Can you tell the time, please?” / This new gadget can tell the time.
